For the first time in Norway, Tabanka Djaz from Guinea-Bissau on stage Saturday October 26!
In the Lusophonic music world, this nearly 30-year-old band are stars, and have several tours behind them both in the United States, on the European continent and of course across the African continent. In the 90s and early 2000s, they released four records with great success. They were nominated for Ngwomo Africa, the African continent’s Grammy, and sold to Platinum.
Then several events happened that would have dramatic consequences for the successful band. A beloved band member, keyboardist Caló Barbosa, passed away in 2006. At the same time, the financial crisis came and hit the local music industry hard. The band’s drummer, Dinho Silva, chose to move back to Angola in 2008.
Then ten years of silence followed, while the band’s fan crowd across the world insisted tirelessly on the band getting back on stage. And here they are!
Today, these four musicians form the main core of the band:
Mikas Cabral (song, guitar)
Juvenal Cabral (bass)
Jânio Barbosa (keyboards) andMimito Lopes (keyboards).
With them, they include drummer Cau Paris, percussionist Kabum, trombonist Lars Arens, saxophonist João Capinha and finally Cláudio Silva on trumpet. And it is sounding like never before!!
Their latest album “Depois do Silêncio” (After the Silence) is a celebration of over a quarter-century existence and reflects the band’s African soul.
